Somewhere between the tide and the sunrise is a place called paradise: The Corn Islands

Paradise is a place you can find on the Corn Islands, more specific Little Corn. This beautiful island on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua has no hard surfaced roads, there are no cars allowed and the Caribbean vibe will give you the ultimate paradise feeling. Very important: be muy tranquilo. That’s all you need to be on this Caribbean island, but don’t worry, the atmosphere won’t let you be anything else.

The name of the Island indicates its size: it’s a small island and you’re able to walk from one side to the other in about 1 hour. We’ve stayed at both sides of the island, where one side is the more touristy area with some nice bars and restaurants, the other side will provide a more relaxed and quiet atmosphere and has the most gorgeous beaches. After spending a week – which is quite long – on the island, we discovered the most amazing, romantic, luxurious, but also cheaper, spots to stay and activities to do on the island. Absolutely sufficient to live the deserted island dream.

Our perfect day at The Little Corn

Wake up in a cabin right on the beach at Grace’s Cool Spot and take a refreshing morning swim in the crystal clear blue water. Have a typical -low budget- local breakfast at the “hidden” spot Rosa’s. You should definitely try the coconut bread: the delicacy of the Corn Islands! If you’re getting hungry again (we feel you), go to the Bagelhouse to get a bagel, muffin or quiche for lunch. It’s a hidden spot close to the main street of the island, where a friendly lady bakes fresh savory and sweet snacks for only $2.

During the day, just relax and save some energy for a walk to Otto beach. This pretty, more hidden beach is a 35 minute walk from the main area of Little Corn Island. Then move your lazy ass and go to the Beach bar, where they have happy hour(s) from 4-7 pm. They serve delicious Nicaraguan rum cocktails, ice cold beers and more important: the most beautiful sunset spot on the island (where we even spotted some dolphins!).

The amazing sunset at the Beach bar

Another really good sunset spot can be found at The Lighthouse with a 360-degree view of the island. You can climb up the stairs, all the way up to the platform. People with extreme fear of heights should think twice. Bring some drinks, chill and enjoy the beautiful view. Afterwards, walk down to The Lighthouse hostel – also an amazing place to sleep – to have some tasty cocktails and dinner. Sundays were the best at this spot, as they organise a live music night where lots of other backpackers will join you.

When the sun has set and the night is on, you can choose between lots of different restaurant/bars to chill and dine. We really liked the food at Tranquilo and Desidiri, where they also invite live bands and organise open mic nights and karaoke (YES). If you’re done with the tranquil vibe and would like to dance a little or play some pool, you can end your night in the Reggae Bar or the Happy hut. There will be a lot of locals willing to play some pool and dance with you!

Beers and sunset on the boat after the snorkel tour

Furthermore there are a lot of nice activities to squeeze into your perfect day at Little Corn Island. You should definitely do a snorkel tour. If possible, go for the sunset snorkel tour. Swim with beautiful fishes, sharks and stingrays. Bring a few of your favorite beers and some music to enjoy a gorgeous sunset while floating on the sea.

Last but not least: on Sundays, the local Little Corn team plays a baseball game on the island, which is the national sport of Nicaragua. The match starts in the morning around 10am and ends around 4pm. Go and join all the locals to support the team!

Follow us our friend, we’ll meet you there in paradise.
